10 Evidences That Strengthen the Case for the Bible #10

Evidence #10 — Manuscript Evidence

One of the strongest reasons scholars have confidence in the Bible is the extraordinary number of ancient manuscripts that preserve its text. No other work from the ancient world comes close to the amount of manuscript evidence that exists for the Bible, especially for the New Testament.

In ancient times, books were copied by hand. Every document had to be reproduced manually by scribes. Because of this, most ancient writings survive in only a small number of copies, often produced many centuries after the original work was written.

The Bible is very different.

Today, thousands of ancient manuscripts of the New Testament exist in Greek, the language in which it was originally written. In addition to these, there are thousands more early translations into languages such as Latin, Syriac, and Coptic. When all of these are considered together, the number of surviving manuscripts reaches into the tens of thousands.

These manuscripts come from different regions and different centuries. Because so many copies exist, scholars are able to compare them with one another and identify any variations that may have occurred during the copying process.

What they consistently find is that the differences between manuscripts are extremely small. Most variations involve minor spelling differences or word order that does not affect the meaning of the text. The central message of the New Testament remains consistent across the manuscript tradition.

The Old Testament also shows remarkable preservation. Ancient scribes developed careful systems for copying the text accurately, and discoveries of ancient manuscripts have confirmed how faithfully the text was transmitted across generations.

The abundance of manuscripts allows scholars to reconstruct the original wording of the biblical text with a very high level of confidence. Rather than losing the message over time, the vast number of copies has actually strengthened the ability to verify the accuracy of the text.

In the world of ancient literature, the Bible stands in a category of its own when it comes to manuscript evidence.

Taken together with the other evidences in this series—the moral awareness of humanity, the design of the universe, the preservation of the text, the growth of the early church, eyewitness testimony, internal consistency, historical corroboration, fulfilled prophecy, and archaeological discoveries—the case for taking the Bible seriously becomes much stronger.

For many people, these evidences do not replace faith, but they do show that faith in the message of the Bible is not blind. It rests on a foundation that has been examined, tested, and preserved throughout history.
