10 Evidences That Strengthen the Case for the Bible #5

Evidence #5 — The Eyewitness Testimony of the Apostles

One of the strongest foundations of the Christian message is that it was built on the testimony of eyewitnesses. The apostles did not present their message as philosophy or speculation. They claimed to be reporting events they had personally seen and experienced.

The central claim of Christianity is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the New Testament, Jesus was publicly executed and buried, and then He appeared alive again to His followers. These appearances were not described as private visions experienced by one individual. Instead, the accounts describe multiple appearances to different people, in different places, over a period of time.

The apostles repeatedly emphasized that they were eyewitnesses to these events. They taught that they had walked with Jesus, heard His teachings, watched His miracles, and ultimately saw Him alive after His crucifixion.

This claim is significant because eyewitness testimony carries a different weight than secondhand stories. A person may repeat something they heard from someone else, but an eyewitness is testifying about what they personally observed.

Even more significant is what the apostles endured as a result of this testimony.

Their message did not bring them wealth, political power, or social advantage. Instead, it brought opposition, imprisonment, and persecution. Many of the apostles faced severe suffering because they continued to proclaim that Jesus had risen from the dead.

People may die for something they believe to be true, even if they are mistaken. But very few people are willing to suffer and die for something they know to be a lie. If the resurrection story had been fabricated, the apostles themselves would have known it.

Yet they continued proclaiming their message even when it cost them their freedom and, in many cases, their lives.

Their willingness to endure suffering does not prove every detail of their message by itself, but it strongly supports the sincerity of their testimony. They were not repeating rumors. They believed they were bearing witness to events they had personally experienced.

The early Christian message was therefore built on a foundation of eyewitness testimony. Those who first proclaimed it insisted that the events surrounding Jesus were not myths or legends but historical realities they had seen with their own eyes.

Tomorrow we will examine the sixth evidence: the remarkable internal consistency of the Bible across many authors and centuries.
