Examination of Conscience for Adults Based on the Ten Commandments and The Greatest Commandment

I seen an ad for a free download for something called a questionnaire for kids regarding the Ten Commandments. As I am reading I’m thinking to myself how can we adults question a child’s actions until we know we are solid in our actions. So I recreated the questionnaire for adults.

God’s commandments are a guide for living a life that honors Him and loves others well. Use this examination of conscience to reflect honestly on your life, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal areas for growth, repentance, and renewal.

First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.”

  • Have I made God the most important part of my life?
  • Do I spend time in prayer, worship, and reading God’s Word regularly?
  • Have I allowed work, relationships, entertainment, or other pursuits to take priority over my relationship with God?
  • Have I trusted God in all areas of my life, or do I rely more on myself or others?
  • Have I sought wisdom or comfort in practices like astrology, superstitions, or anything that replaces trust in God?

Second Commandment: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

  • Do I speak of God with reverence and respect?
  • Have I used God’s name carelessly, in anger, or as part of a joke?
  • Do I represent God and His Word truthfully in my speech and actions?
  • Have I used foul or disrespectful language that dishonors God?

Third Commandment: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

  • Do I set aside time for worship, rest, and reflection on God’s goodness?
  • Have I allowed work or personal activities to distract me from honoring God?
  • Do I gather regularly with other believers for worship and encouragement?
  • Do I take time to focus on God throughout the week, not just on Sundays?

Fourth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother.”

  • Do I show love, respect, and gratitude toward my parents or those in authority?
  • Have I harbored bitterness or resentment toward my parents?
  • Do I seek to reconcile strained family relationships?
  • Have I set an example of honor and respect for my children or others?
  • Do I willingly serve and help my family, even when it’s inconvenient?

Fifth Commandment: “You shall not murder.”

  • Have I harbored anger, hatred, or bitterness toward anyone?
  • Have I used my words or actions to hurt others, either intentionally or out of frustration?
  • Have I forgiven those who have wronged me, or do I hold onto grudges?
  • Do I value all human life, treating everyone with dignity and respect?
  • Have I cared for my body and health as God’s temple?

Sixth Commandment: “You shall not commit adultery.”

  • Have I honored my marriage (or future marriage) in thought, word, and deed?
  • Have I entertained lustful thoughts or sought out inappropriate content?
  • Do I treat others with purity and respect, avoiding objectifying them?
  • Have I honored God’s design for intimacy and relationships in my life?

Seventh Commandment: “You shall not steal.”

  • Have I taken anything that doesn’t belong to me, including time, resources, or recognition?
  • Do I manage my finances with integrity and avoid greed?
  • Have I been generous and willing to share with those in need?
  • Do I appreciate what I have, or do I focus on what I lack?

Eighth Commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

  • Have I been truthful in all my words and actions?
  • Have I gossiped, spread rumors, or spoken negatively about others?
  • Do I keep my promises and commitments, even when it’s difficult?
  • Have I stood up for the truth when it mattered, or have I remained silent out of fear?

Ninth Commandment: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.”

  • Have I respected the sanctity of marriage, both my own and others’?
  • Have I entertained jealousy or desire for someone else?
  • Do I honor God in my thoughts and actions, remaining faithful to His standard of purity?

Tenth Commandment: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”

  • Have I been content with what God has provided, or have I envied what others have?
  • Do I focus on material possessions rather than spiritual growth and generosity?
  • Have I thanked God for the blessings He has given me?

The Greatest Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind… and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Jesus teaches us that love is the foundation of all commandments. Reflect on how well you live out this calling:

  • Do I love God with all my heart, soul, and mind, giving Him my best in every area of life?
  • Have I spent time building my relationship with Him through prayer, worship, and obedience?
  • Do I love others as myself, showing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion?
  • Do I prioritize my own needs and desires over the well-being of others?
  • Do I do what is best for me, or do I sacrifice for others, even when it’s difficult or inconvenient?
  • Do I serve others selflessly, as Jesus serves and loves me?
  • Have I shown grace and patience to those who frustrate or hurt me, reflecting God’s love to the world?

Conclude your reflection with prayer, asking God for forgiveness, strength, and guidance to live a life that honors Him.

1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
