We Are All Soldiers for Christ, No Matter Our Profession

In our day-to-day lives, it’s easy to overlook the spiritual significance of the small things we do. But as Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” This verse is a powerful reminder that every action we take, no matter how mundane, can bring glory to God. But what does that look like for us, especially when we’re not in traditional ministry roles? How do we glorify God in the workplace or in our daily tasks when we’re plumbers, cooks, retail workers, or in my case—running a screenprinting business with a retail apparel store?

The reality is, no matter our job or station in life, God calls us to glorify Him wherever we are. The call to be a soldier for Christ is not limited to pastors, missionaries, or those involved in full-time ministry. It extends to every believer, no matter what role they fill. For many of us, the mission field looks like the workplace, where we meet people in their ordinary, everyday moments. This is where the opportunity to live for Christ and reflect His glory becomes so powerful.

In my screenprinting shop, I have countless opportunities to glorify God every time a customer walks through the door. It might seem like just another business transaction, but it’s so much more than that. Every person who stands at my counter represents a chance to share the love of Christ. They see the crucifix I wear on my necklace, and while I don’t always speak about my faith, they hear worship music playing instead of the modern secular music they might expect. When the right moment arises, I make it a point to mention Christ in the conversation. Sometimes it’s as simple as offering words of encouragement, or letting someone know I’m praying for them. Other times, it’s a deeper conversation about faith.

What I’ve realized over the years is that people are watching. Even when they don’t say it, they notice the atmosphere in my store, the music, the crucifix. I’ve had customers comment on the worship music or ask about my faith, and those moments have opened doors to conversations about Christ. It’s amazing how God uses the simplest things—music, a necklace, or a kind word—to plant seeds in the hearts of those around us.

This is what it means to live out 1 Corinthians 10:31. It’s not about being in full-time ministry, but rather using every opportunity in our everyday lives to reflect Christ. Whether I’m talking to a customer, working on a design, or just going about my daily tasks, I want everything I do to be for the glory of God. And I believe that applies to all of us, no matter our profession.

If you’re a plumber, you might not think your work has anything to do with glorifying God, but it does. When you show up on time, do your work with excellence, and treat your customers with honesty and respect, you are reflecting Christ. The same goes for teachers, doctors, and even stay-at-home parents. Every act of kindness, every moment of integrity, and every opportunity to serve others can be an opportunity to glorify God.

We are all soldiers for Christ, no matter what job we hold. And as soldiers, we are called to be a light in the world, shining the love of Christ wherever we go. Matthew 5:16 tells us, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This is our mission, and it’s one that we can fulfill no matter what our daily life looks like.

When I think about the times I’ve had opportunities to share my faith in the shop, I’m reminded of how God can use the simplest things to reach people. There was a customer who came in one day to pick up a large order. I could tell they were having a rough day, so I asked them how things were going. They opened up about some personal struggles they were facing, and I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to explain how I have chosen to give my problems to God. It wasn’t a long discussion, but it was a moment of connection, and I believe God used that moment to plant a seed of faith.

We never know how God will use the interactions we have with others to further His kingdom. The workplace, the home, the grocery store—these are all mission fields where we can be witnesses for Christ. And often, it’s in the small moments, the everyday conversations, that God does His most powerful work.

I want to encourage you, no matter what your profession or daily responsibilities, to see your work as an opportunity to glorify God. It’s easy to get caught up in the routine of life and forget that we are on mission for Christ. But the truth is, every interaction, every task, and every moment can be used by God to bring glory to His name. Whether you’re fixing a pipe, teaching a class, caring for your children, or running a business, you have the opportunity to reflect the love of Christ and point others toward Him.

We may not always see the fruit of our efforts right away. Sometimes it takes time for seeds to grow. But as soldiers for Christ, our job is to be faithful in the small things, trusting that God will use them for His glory. The customer who hears worship music in my store may not say anything, but perhaps that music will remind them of something deeper, something they need in their life. The person who sees my crucifix may not ask about it, but maybe it will spark a thought about faith. And the person I pray with may not have an immediate change of heart, but that prayer might be the beginning of a journey toward Christ.

This is why 1 Corinthians 10:31 is so powerful. It reminds us that everything we do—whether we think it’s significant or not—can be for the glory of God. The way we live, work, and interact with others speaks volumes about our faith. We may not be pastors, but we are all soldiers for Christ, called to live in such a way that others see Him in us.

I’ve come to realize that my screenprinting shop is more than just a business; it’s a ministry. Every day, I have the opportunity to serve people, not just by providing a product, but by showing them the love of Christ. And that’s something we can all do, no matter where we are or what we’re doing.

So I encourage you, in whatever profession or role you find yourself, to remember that you are a soldier for Christ. You are called to live out your faith in the everyday moments of life, reflecting His glory and pointing others to Him. And as you do, remember that God can use the smallest acts of kindness, the simplest words of encouragement, and the quietest prayers to bring others closer to Him.

We are all part of God’s mission, and together, we can bring glory to His name in everything we do.
